This study is an attempt to describe the terminology of Metroxylon sago among the Melanau community in Mukah, Sarawak (Malaysia). The paper is divided into three main sections: the research method, introduction to the Melanau and their language, and the description of sago terms. The research results reported here are based on data collected in a qualitative research project, featuring face to face interviews in situ. Lexical items related to the sago palm plant and its taxonomy; the harvesting process; processing sago and its products; and, ethno-cultural issues are discussed in this paper.

Hydroxypropyl Starch Nanoparticles as Controlled Release

Hydroxypropyl starch was synthesized by modified sago starch with hydroxypropylation reaction. Hydroxypropyl starch nanoparticles with mean particle sizes of 110 nm are obtained by controlled precipitation through the drop-wise addition of dissolved hydroxypropyl starch solution into excess absolute ethanol. Piperine was loaded onto hydroxypropyl starch nanoparticles and native starch nanoparti...

High incidence of nasopharyngeal carcinoma in native people of Sarawak, Borneo Island.

Nasopharyngeal cancer (NPC) is generally a rare malignancy with a few well-known exceptions, notably South-East China. In this article, we describe evidence of a high risk of NPC in the population of Sarawak State, Malaysia, and particularly in one native ethnic group. Sarawak State is one of the two provinces of Malaysia located on the island of Borneo. The native population (71.6%) includes t...

from the sago palm is the starchy fibrous pith residue. This residue is abundantly and cheaply available especially in the state of Sarawak, Malaysia. It is usually washed off into drains or nearby streams together with wastewater, thus contributing to pollution load, or deposited in the factory’s compound, which can lead to serious environmental problems. It has no significant industrial or co...

Burkholderia vietnamiensis isolated from root tissues of Nipa Palm (Nypa fruticans) in Sarawak, Malaysia, proved to be its major endophytic nitrogen-fixing bacterium.

Root-associating bacteria of the nipa palm (Nypa fruticans), preferring brackish-water affected mud in Sarawak, Malaysia, were investigated. In a comparison of rhizobacterial microbiota between the nipa and the sago (Metroxylon sagu) palm, it was found that the nipa palm possessed a group of Burkholderia vietnamiensis as its main active nitrogen-fixing endophytic bacterium. Acetylene reduction ...
